Along the stunning Albanian Riviera unfolds the rocky coastline of Southern Albania, dotted with picturesque villages, home to about 28,000 inhabitants. Visitors can choose from beautiful tourist destinations like Palasa, Dhermi, Ilias, Vuno, Himara, Pilur, Qeparo, Borsh, Piqeras, Sasaj, Lukova, Coraj, Kuç, Kallarat, Bolen, and Vranisht. The region of Himara, part of the Vlora District, lies in southwestern Albania, stretching along the Ionian Sea shores, bordered northeast by the Ceraunian Mountains and Karaburun Peninsula. With its enchanting panorama and typical Mediterranean climate, Himara is one of Albania’s most important coastal tourist cities.
The old town of Himara and its castle, built on a hill, are significant monuments of Albanian history, evidencing Illyrian-era constructions in these Albanian territories. The old Himara is organized around the old fortress and the coastal area of Spilea, the touristic and economic center of the area.
Himara features a promenade along the seafront, lined with numerous Mediterranean-style taverns. North of Himara, visitors can discover the rocky villages of Vuno, Ilias, Dhermi, and Palasa. Dhermi is a favorite destination for both foreign and local tourists, thanks to an increasing number of resorts, bars, and beautiful restaurants near the shores.
For history lovers, there’s also the opportunity to visit various churches within the fortress of Himara, built during antiquity. The Church of the Virgin Mary or Episcopal Church, built on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, and the Church of All Saints, easily accessible at the fortress’s entrance, are some of the most notable churches along the Himara shores.
