Tropoja, the Natural Gem of the North

Tropoja remains the touristic treasure of the Albanian Alps, along with the crystalline beauty of Valbona Valley.

Located in northeastern Albania, Tropoja borders Montenegro to the north, the Has District to the south, the Shkodër Region to the west, and Kosovo to the east.

Tropoja is a typical mountainous area, with the majority of its territory covered by steep and high mountains. The average altitude in the Tropoja District is among the highest in Albania – 1105 meters above sea level.

The climate in Tropoja is alpine in the Alps area and continental Mediterranean in the rest, characterized by long, harsh winters and short, cool summers.

The Tropoja District is rich in natural waters and is bathed by numerous rivers with clear waters and glacial lakes, which create enchanting valleys with touristic and scientific values. Among these, the Gashi River, whose valley is declared a first-category National Park, and the Valbona River, whose valley is declared a National Natural Park, stand out.

It’s rare to see an area as beautiful as Tropoja and its natural wonders; a land rich with endless above and underground resources, with around 200 types of medicinal and aromatic plants, and minerals such as chromium from Rragam and Kam, bauxite from Valbona and Maja e Hekurave, and quartz from Kërrnaja.

Tropoja hosts the largest chestnut forest not only in Albania but also in the Balkans, favored by its considerable altitude above sea level and the variation of mountainous terrain and alpine pastures.

Tourism is the most promising sector for the future, especially mountain tourism, which is mainly developed in the Valbona Valley but also in many other unexploited attractions.
